A Very Sad Loss, And More On Charlie Allen’s Comment

Monday, August 8th, 2011

How very sad the loss of 30 Americans last week in one incident in Afghanistan.  The SEALs we lost, and the other special forces operators we are seeing more of, are among the best of our best.   These experts are involved in so many initiatives around the globe to safeguard our way of life.  We mourn their passing.

It is noteworthy that the SOCOM change of command ceremony is today.
Charlie Allen’s comment on the loss of  “analytic capability” continues to draw lots of observations:

“I think it is always a mistake to assume technology can substitute for good analytic effort, energy and judgment (plus teamwork—it is not always about individuals).  And I have seen technology be given the lead too many times (even though I am a technologist).”

“In the age of efficiencies, we will see (are already seeing) existing programs blocking innovation in the name of efficiency.  This is bad news for DoD and the IC….If ROI is determined for government programs and innovation is allowed to be crushed, we will get real dumb—-real quick.”

“Charlie is spot on.  Technology is not the panacea of intelligence analysis—-it is only an enabling tool.”
